I was running late. ⁣ ⁣ GPS directed me to some crazy narrow back roads full of potholes. There I was, driving by myself in the dark hoping I’d make it on time (and make it period) to this event I’d been looking forward to for weeks. ⁣ ⁣ Slowly rounding a curve I heard a familiar sound- tires spinning. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a little sedan was stuck in the mud and in a dangerous position.⁣ ⁣ I drove right past and started to say a little prayer for them but God stopped me and spoke right to my gut:⁣ ⁣ “Turn around, Kaitlin. You’ve been there before.” ⁣ ⁣ So I whipped the truck around and pulled behind them. ⁣ ⁣ “Need a push?” ⁣ ⁣ “You’re an angel!!” ⁣ ⁣ It didn’t take much muscle at all to push the car back safely into the driveway we were both in. ⁣ ⁣ “Oh my God I love you!!”⁣ ⁣ They had a game plan from there, so with lots of smiles, laughs and waves between us off I went. ⁣ ⁣ Grand total time investment “out of my way”?⁣ ⁣ 90 seconds. ⁣ ⁣ And guess what? That human connection, that unexpected moment turned out to be way more meaningful to me than the event I was headed to. ⁣ ⁣ I do not share this to brag or say “look at me I did a good thing”! ⁣ ⁣ No. ⁣ ⁣ I share this because it served a timely reminder to never be too busy, too hurried or too preoccupied to turn around and lend a hand. ⁣ ⁣ How many times have I been stuck in that mud, literally and metaphorically, and had an angel come to my rescue?⁣ ⁣ So many. ⁣ ⁣ Even 3 minutes conjuring those memories from my life while writing this got me all weepy. ⁣ ⁣ In sharing my hope is to inspire two things:⁣ ⁣ 1) When you’re stuck in the mud, have faith and keep faith. Someone somehow will show up. Neither of you may know it yet, but there are unseen forces working all the time. ⁣ ⁣ 2) Let’s not be too busy to help one another. Lending a hand may be a lot easier than you think. Plus who knows; it may just be more meaningful than whatever else you were gonna do ♥️
QUEER YOUR VOICE: Part II⁣ ⁣⁣ As my dear friend and mentor Reverend Lynice Pinkard says, “Queerness is not about who you’re f*ckin. It’s about transgression from a place of dislocation. It’s opening to every form of weirdness. We don’t want this word to lose it’s chain of significance; we want what it initially signified- weird, strange, peculiar. That’s the people we want to be. We want to be queer and we want to queer everything we touch. That’s the weirdness we want. Queerness is about all kinds of cross-fertilization.”⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ In that same vein, queering your voice is not solely about singing. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ It’s about using your actual voice as the tool for justice it’s meant to be. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ It’s about daring to be a voice outside the normy box and inspiring others to do the same.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ It’s about speaking up when toxic culture says not to, and roaring in an interconnected culture.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ It’s about being a beacon of light for the world we’re creating and leading the way with your unique call. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ It’s about being proVOCAtive in your truth while lifting up the voices of those who have been silenced for far too long. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ What other ways can you queer your voice? ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ How can you use your instrument as a tool for real change in a way that is unprecedented and joyful? ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I’d love to hear your ideas. I LIKE IT RAW. ⁣ ⁣ Stripped down. ⁣ ⁣ Forget “pretty”. ⁣ ⁣ I want it bare. ⁣ ⁣ I want it real. ⁣ ⁣ Just you, me and our naked....⁣ ⁣ voices.⁣ ⁣ ⁣ I did so much old-school vocal training growing up. So many competitions. So much perfectionism. While I learned a ton and am forever grateful for those years, it honestly fucked with my head a lot. ⁣ ⁣ I developed a crippling inner-critic, manipulated my voice to “get me places”, and found myself exhausted in comparing myself to others. ⁣ ⁣ ugh. ⁣ ⁣ So, the past 14 years I have been actively UNlearning. UNdoing. UNperfecting my “Soprano 1” and excavating the rawness, the realness of my true voice. It’s been a huge process on every level of my soul and my biggest spiritual teacher. The unfurling of JOY I’ve discovered is unparalleled. ⁣ ⁣ Best part? It ain’t over, and I pray it will never be over. I pray that I continue to discover juicy nuances and layers and hone my instrument to be available for whatever the world needs sung at ANY given moment. ⁣ ⁣ And that is precisely what I’m here help you do, too. Because the world needs it so bad, y’all. ⁣ ⁣ Because THAT level of vulnerability is what revolutions are made of. It’s what tears down the walls between us and makes us human. It’s what connects us at the CORE of who we are. When that is strong, nothing can stop us from creating the world we know is possible. ⁣ ⁣ So take off your vocal makeup. You don’t need it. You’re too fucking beautiful to cover up your voice with all the old stories about how it’s not “pretty” enough or good enough. ⁣ ⁣ Take off your vocal lingerie. You don’t need frilly lace to impress anyone. You’re barrenness is more gorgeous than you could imagine. ⁣ ⁣ Take off your fears and perfectionism. Let me see you be a sweet child, juicy goddess and wise crone all at the same time. ⁣ ⁣ And when you feel ready, squeeze my hand and bless us all with your truest, most primal soulsong. ⁣ ⁣ I have multiple clear offerings to meet you where you’re at on your journey.
